Our Event with Anita Shreve Has Been Cancelled

We regret to announce that due to unexpected surgery, our event with Anita Shreve and the Friends of the Elm Grove Library at the Elm Grove Woman’s Club has been cancelled. While there are no plans for the event to be rescheduled, we are hoping to announce another Elm Grove partnership shortly.

If you bought your tickets through Brown Paper Tickets, your purchase will be automatically refunded. For tickets bought through the Elm Grove Library, you will be contacted with information about obtaining your refund. And please do not forget about the paperback edition of The Stars Are Fire, which goes on sale March 27. It is inspired by the great Maine fire of 1947 and is classic Shreve, the story of a woman who is confronted not just with this disaster, but a marital one as well.

We are sad to report that Anita Shreve, the beloved writer and bestselling novelist, died yesterday at her home in New Hampshire, following a battle with cancer. She was 71.

Shreve was the author of nineteen novels, including The Pilot’s WifeResistance, and The Weight of Water, which were all made into movies. Her first story, Past the Island, Drifting, was published in 1975, and her first novel, Eden Close, was published in 1989. Her final work, The Stars Are Fire, was published by Knopf in 2017.

Her editor Jordan Pavlin said: “Anita’s writing has touched the lives of millions of readers around the world, and she did some of her most elegant, rich, and unforgettable work in the last years of her life. Her body of work is extraordinary, and her books will continue to be read for generations.”
