Lights of Love Celebrates 25 Years!

In the fall of 1995, then-president Susan Weiss suggested that the Friends of the Elm Grove Library expand it’s fundraising efforts and proposed a village tree lighting event where residents could buy lights in honor of friends and loved ones with the proceeds benefitting the library remodeling project happening at that time.  FOEGL board member Connie Hauer stepped forward to lead the new event, coined “Lights of Love,” and an Elm Grove tradition was born!

In addition to being a fun community event, Lights of Love has been a very successful fundraiser for the library as well.  In its inaugural year, the event raised nearly $8,000 and in recent years the event has consistently raised over $15,000!  The donations received by Lights of Love are passed onto the library and have been used for countless projects and enhancements over the past two decades.  From assisting with the library remodel in the mid-90s, to purchasing a CD-ROM and the library’s first digital camera in the 2000s, to consistently expanding the large-print book and board book collections, to purchasing specialty furnishings, and so much more, our Elm Grove Library would not be the same without Lights of Love!

This year the village tree lighting celebration continues on Sunday, December 8th at 3:30pm.  Children can enter a raffle to “Flip the Switch” and turn on the tree lights each time they check out books from the library in the month of November.  New for 2019, there will be an entertaining & interactive performance, “How To Be An Elf” that is sure to amuse guests of all ages.  The tree lighting will occur at 4:45, followed by a reception in the village courtroom. We hope to see you there!
